i’m so behind

as always.
I have lots of client stuff to post, but today I wanted to share other stuff. I spent the weekend at Spark the Event helping Jefra Linn teach her totally cool photography class, and the whole event was so amazing and inspiring. I met some incredible women – artists, including the girls behind the event. (Jefra, Elizabeth Kartchner, Margie Romney-Aslett, and Rhonna Farrer) Anyway, I’m finally coming back to earth after a weekend like that.
It’s so interesting to me that the photography online world is a whole different world than the crafting online world, because I felt at home in the company of these other artists. I am going to be adding a couple more local links of interest to my sidebar for those interested.
So, pictures from Spark.

A couple of photos I took during the demonstration. Aren’t they lovely?

And these last two are from Kelly McCaleb’s class. I love, love , loved her use of fabric in those scrapbooking pages you see hanging there. If anything could inspire me to try scrapbooking again, it would be seeing those layouts. Gorgeous.

these are so beautiful and thank you for sharing them … your approach (composition and processing) feel like it fit the mood perfectly! I’m not a scrapbooker but I love their attention to detail and i love that your sharing that detail here! … they are an incredibly artistic group, so I do love to lurk in their on line community and you’re right … the community has a different feel than the photographic community … i wonder why that is? :(

Oh, honestly I think it’s just a different community with different prominent voices. There’s a bit less “competition” than there is in the photography community, (though most of the photographers I’ve met are far from competitive). There’s maybe a bit more open sharing and a bit less holding back for crafters? I don’t really know, because I don’t have the time to keep up with another group of people on the internet. My experience meeting people from both groups has been overwhelmingly positive. It’s just interesting that we don’t know each other better. I think we could learn from each other.

And also,
I think that crafters more easily accept that their art is art. They take something that was nothing and make it into something beautiful, and it’s easy to see that they are the voice behind their art.
Photographers, on the other hand, tend to struggle with acceptance of their own voice. It’s easy to think that maybe it’s just my equipment, just the subject, or just a couple of photoshop tricks. It’s harder to hold onto that confidence in your own vision.

i think you’re last statements rings so true (i struggle with this daily!) … i also think there is more of a ‘this way is the right way’ mentality in the portrait world … noticed i didn’t say photographic world :) … and it’s really hard as photographers to not get wrapped up in that ‘right way – wrong way’ … thanks again for sharing and for sharing your thoughts :)
